(SPOILERS!) The book finally got to Frodo's main storyline. So Frodo and Sam have finally met Gollum. Now, Gollum is a pretty interesting character if not the most interesting character in the Lord of The Rings. He used to be a hobbit like creature that I can't remember the name of. But then he found the Ring of Power, and it seduced him almost immediately. He strangled and killed his best friend for it. After that it was all downhill from there,he became obessed with the ring, he started to form into an ugly pale creature. His mind became really simple minded and downright evil. Smeagel was his real name, but then he developed a second personality called Gollum.
Smeagel is a perfect symbol of corruption. he was a happy, simple minded person can be shaped into this souless,cold, almost pathetic individual. in the pages I've read Smeagel, seems to be trying to take control of himself away from Gollum ,almost like how an addict trys to take control of their addiction. But knowing that he gets seduced by the ring agian and dies becuase of it, I feel bad for him, he's too broken beyond repair, you want him to be an ally because you see that he used to be a good hearted person and some of that shines out in him, but you eventually find out that he is fighting a losing battle.
